A Quick Tour of 'Julie' (N4261J)

The other side of the engine, showing the more hellish part of the sanding job. Aircraft Engines are very different Animals than the car engines I'm used too. This is a Lycoming O-320. The engine is a 5.2 litre (320ci) four cylinder, air-cooled powerplant which outputs 160 HP at 2700 RPM. The (amazing to me) kicker is that this whole assembly weighs a mere 300lbs wet. The other thing to keep in mind is that these powerplants are designed to run at full rated power for hours on end (try doing that to your car engine and report back the results;)) And most amazingly, the 0-320 is over 50 years old. Granted, I'd love to see what modern engine technology could do to create a new aviation engine (there isn't enough of a market to justify the R&D right now)... but still, for lightweight, bulletproof reliable and simple power, its hard to beat these old 'lycosaurs'. 6/17/06 7:49 PM
